Warner rose to fame in the 1980s as the son of Cliff and Clair Huxtable on The Cosby Show, a role that earned him critical acclaim and established him as one of television’s most beloved young actors. As Theo, Warner portrayed a relatable, intelligent, and often humorous teenager, helping to reshape the image of Black families on television.
Beyond his iconic role, Warner built a successful career in television, film, music, and spoken word. He starred in the UPN sitcom Malcolm & Eddie, had roles in Reed Between the Lines, The Resident, and 9-1-1, and appeared in several stage productions. He also directed episodes of popular shows including Kenan & Kel, All That, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
An accomplished musician, Warner played bass in his jazz-funk band, Miles Long, and won a Grammy Award in 2015 for Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Jesus Children” alongside Robert Glasper and Lalah Hathaway. His spoken word album Hiding In The Plain View, released in 2022, was also nominated for a Grammy.
In addition to his entertainment career, Warner was an advocate for mental health awareness and co-hosted the podcast Not All Hood, which focused on healing and resilience in the Black community.
Warner kept his personal life private but was known to be married and had one daughter. He often spoke about the importance of family, legacy, and representing Black culture with integrity and depth.
Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s death marks the loss of a generational talent who influenced television, music, and poetry with grace and authenticity. Tributes from colleagues, fans, and cultural leaders are expected in the coming days as the world mourns the passing of a beloved actor and artist.
Warner is survived by his wife, daughter, and a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.
