The Delta State University community is reeling after the death of Demartravion “Trey” Reed, a 21-year-old student whose body was discovered early Monday morning hanging from a tree near the school’s pickleball courts.
Campus police and local authorities say they received a call at approximately 7:05 a.m. reporting an unresponsive person. When officers arrived, they found Reed deceased at the scene. Bolivar County Coroner’s Office confirmed that an autopsy will be conducted to determine the official cause of death. At this time, investigators say there is no evidence of foul play and are treating the incident as a possible suicide.
The sudden death has shaken students and faculty alike. Delta State University immediately canceled all classes and centennial celebrations planned for the day, while also making counseling and support services available for students, staff, and faculty.
Reed, a native of Grenada, Mississippi, was remembered by peers as an ambitious and driven young man. Friends and family have shared tributes on social media, describing him as “kindhearted” and “always smiling.”
However, Reed’s death has also sparked questions and concerns. A circulating social media post from a person claiming to be Reed’s cousin alleged that his body showed signs of physical trauma, including broken limbs and bruising. Authorities have publicly stated they have found no evidence of broken arms or legs, but the coroner’s final report has yet to be released.
Community activists are calling for transparency as the investigation continues. “Anytime a young Black man is found hanging, we have to ask questions,” said one local organizer. “We want to make sure this family gets the truth.”
Delta State University President Daniel Ennis issued a statement expressing condolences to Reed’s family and urging the campus to support one another. “Our hearts are broken,” the statement read. “We mourn the loss of a member of our university family and will walk alongside our students and staff during this difficult time.”
The Bolivar County Sheriff’s Office has asked the public to refrain from sharing graphic images or videos connected to the incident out of respect for Reed’s loved ones.
The investigation is ongoing, and more details are expected to be released following the autopsy
