Danielle Spencer, remembered by millions as the unforgettable little sister Dee Thomas from the classic 1970s sitcom What’s Happening!!, has passed away at the age of 60 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Her family confirmed the news, and tributes from across the entertainment world have poured in, led by her co-star and lifelong friend Haywood Nelson.
Spencer first captured America’s heart in 1976 with her quick wit, signature sass, and legendary catchphrase “Ooooh, I’m gonna tell Mama!” As the younger sister to Raj, her side-eyes and comedic timing helped make What’s Happening!! one of television’s most beloved depictions of Black family life. She reprised the role in the 1980s sequel What’s Happening Now!! and continued to delight audiences with her charm and humor.
Her life was marked by profound challenges and extraordinary resilience. At just 12 years old during the first season of the show, Spencer survived a devastating car accident that claimed the life of her stepfather. She spent three weeks in a coma and lived with lingering spinal and neurological complications for the rest of her life.

In the years that followed, she endured and overcame multiple health battles. In 2014, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy. Four years later, she required emergency brain surgery to treat bleeding linked to the decades-old accident. Through it all, she carried herself with strength and dignity, inspiring fans with her determination.
Outside of Hollywood, Spencer dedicated herself to caring for animals. She earned her veterinary degree from Tuskegee University in 1993 and continued her studies at UC Davis and UCLA. She became a respected veterinarian, educator, and animal rights advocate, a second career that showcased her compassion beyond the screen.
Her cultural impact was formally recognized when she became the first child star inducted into the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. The honor underscored her significance not only as a performer but as a figure who helped shape positive Black representation on television.
Danielle Spencer’s story is one of talent, perseverance, and service. She was more than a beloved child star. She was a survivor, a healer, and a trailblazer whose legacy will live on in the countless lives she touched.
From What’s Happening!! to veterinary medicine, Danielle Spencer showed us what it means to face life’s challenges with grace and grit. For Black America, she will forever be Dee, the little sister who grew up and made a difference in the world.
