ORANGEBURG, S.C. — South Carolina State University is moving forward with a major fundraising and campus development push as the university continues a period of growth, public attention, and internal scrutiny.
SC State recently announced “The Power of SC State: A Capital Campaign to Elevate Excellence,” a five-year, $41.2 million fundraising initiative focused on student scholarships, athletics, faculty and staff support, academic opportunities, and facility improvements. The university said donors have already contributed more than $17.4 million toward the campaign.
The campaign comes as SC State continues what university leaders describe as a major campus transformation. Recent projects include a $20 million expansion of the Kirkland W. Green Student Center, which will add dining, bookstore, career center, esports, café, and collaboration spaces. The university also broke ground on a $50 million, five-story freshman residence hall expected to house more than 500 students.
At the same time, SC State has faced public attention surrounding its 2026 commencement. After student pushback over the initial selection of South Carolina Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette as commencement speaker, the university announced that SC State National Alumni Association President Yolanda Williams and Student Government Association President Zaria Tucker would serve as keynote speakers. The ceremony was scheduled for Friday, May 8, 2026, at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium, with the university expecting to award about 380 undergraduate and graduate degrees.
SC State is also facing a lawsuit filed by the South Carolina State University Foundation. According to WIS, the foundation alleges the university pressured the organization for funding and retaliated when certain requests were not granted. The university told WIS it had received the lawsuit and was reviewing it. The allegations remain claims in pending litigation.
Despite those challenges, the university continues to highlight momentum in fundraising, research, and student investment. SC State’s recent news page also lists new research-related developments, including its participation in a national HBCU research coalition and a grant supporting coastal water and aquaculture research.
Together, the developments show a university working to expand its physical campus, strengthen student support, and elevate its research profile while also navigating questions over governance, donor relations, and student voice.
